The car slowed, and Hunter climbed out, waving at his brother as he wandered to the other side to let his guest out of the car.

Her dark hair reached below her waist, and she was dressed in a tight beige turtleneck dress that somehow left little to the imagination. A gold belt cinched her tiny waist, and once she stood up, she was at least six inches taller than me, which wasn’t hard to do. Her scarlet lipstick pursed into a smile, but the oversized black sunglasses made it impossible to see her eyes.

But I didn’t need to see them to know she was drooling over Cash.

“This is Brielle, a friend of mine.” Hunter smiled at us. “You must be Maya.”

I nodded, suddenly feeling very underdressed in my flannel for the camping trip.

Hunter closed the car door, and Brielle pursed her lips into a scowl. “Nice to meet you.”

Didn’t seem like it.

“Nice to meet you too,” I told her as Cash reached out his hand to hers.

“Any friend of my brother’s is a friend of mine.” He gave a quick nod, but she didn’t release his hand for a second, which made Cash glance awkwardly at me.

I shrugged, and she finally let go.

“How long have you been seeing each other?” I asked.

“We’ve known each other for years,” she drawled. “But I knew better than to date him, sweetie. He’s not the marrying type.”

“Oh.” I glanced at Cash, who looked as baffled as I felt.

Hunter went to the trunk of his car and pulled out two big bags. “Should I put them in the Winnebago?”

Cash nodded. “Go ahead. It’s unlocked.”

Brielle didn’t try to help as Hunter walked by with their luggage, and Cash followed him inside with my bag.

Awkward.

I glanced at Brielle, who was sneering at Chewie. “What is that thing?”

“She’s a teacup Pom. Her name is Chewie,” I answered proudly.

Brielle’s brow arched, escaping her sunglasses. “Whatever.”

I smiled. “So, what do you do for a living?”

She laughed, which made me glance at the Winnebago, wishing they’d come out quickly. I didn’t know it was that funny of a question.

“I married well and divorced even better.”

“Ah, gotcha.” I smoothed my palms over my flannel, confused about why Hunter wanted to spend time with this woman.

Although, I didn’t know Hunter, so...

When the door opened, Cash dashed down the two small steps and walked over to me and wrapped his arms over my shoulder, kissing me just behind my ear.

I caught a withering look from Brielle, and that was with her shades on.

I hid a smile and turned to face Cash, grateful that he was so attentive in front of the ice queen.

“I’ll go grab my bag, load up the freezer, and we’re off.” Cash smiled. “Just don’t let me forget to unplug it before we take off.”

“No promises.”
