“Awesome. Fun. Perfect.”
“Good. That’s what you deserve.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
“I’ll let you get back to your friend. You doing okay?”
“I told you I was.”
“Yeah, but a dad worries and doesn’t always trust their children when they say that. I need to be sure.”
“I promise I’m good,” I tell him, holding up a pinky.
“You and your damn pinky promises.”
“It’s binding.”
We pinky promise and he kisses me on the cheek, walking to the door. “You can come out now, Paisley!” he hollers.
“Oh, good! It was going to be harder for me to eavesdrop when you moved to the door!” she hollers back and he grins.
“I like her.”
I laugh. “You met her ten seconds ago.”
“Still. She’s honest. You need honesty in your life.”
He’s not wrong.
He leaves just as Paisley returns to the living room. “Your dad’s hot.”
I gag. “Oh my gosh, gross!”
She grins. “Just sayin’. He’s got that silver fox thing going for him. And he’s still pretty fit. That shirt showed some serious muscle happening.”
“Stop talking.”
“So you and Brock, huh?”
“Were you listening the entire time?”
“Of course I was.”
I really hope she gets the job here in Red Oak. I kinda like her, too.
ChapterTwenty-One
Brock
“Stay close,” Boone tells Cody.
“Yeah, yeah. I know,” he grumbles as he walks to a group of his friends.
The Spring Festival is underway. The weather is perfect. The scent of food lingers in the air, making my stomach growl. And games are set up all through the streets. Vendors are here to sell their little knickknacks and tchotchkes. Local businesses have their doors open, encouraging people to come in and browse around and shop. And there are people everywhere.
With the weather in the mid-seventies and the sun shining, it looks like the entire town plus the neighboring towns are here to enjoy the day. This year, Lake Electrical decided last minute to join the fun and have a dunk tank. Corbin talked to the City Council just last week to get it arranged. We’re raising money for the local food shelf and are charging a buck a ball. Cash and his crew were the lucky ones who drew the short straw and will be staffing it.
Which means Boone and I are about to spend every last bit of cash in our pockets to get them in the water.
