Sarah chuckled. “You are not as charming as you think.”

“Yes, I am,” I said, hugging her tighter to me. “We need to talk, babe.”

“About Holly?”

I nodded. “Yes, and a lot more than that.”

She sighed. “I know.”

Taking her hand, I led her out of the garage and back into the main part of the house. Sitting her on a stool at the kitchen bar, I pushed the pregnancy test towards her.

“How did Scribe know you needed one of these?”

Sarah bit her thumbnail and muttered. “I may have let it slip when we talked.”

“Did you tell anyone else?”

“No,” she whispered, picking up the box. “Gunner, what if I’m pregnant?”

Taking a seat next to her, I simply replied. “Then we’re gonna be parents.”

“My mom and dad are going to kill me.”

“Not before your dad kills me first,” I muttered, rubbing the back of my neck. “Look, Sarah, I know you saw me leaving Holly’s house last night. I want you to know nothing happened.”

“I know. Scribe told me.”

“I think before we do anything, we need to find out if you’re pregnant or not. Best not pile on the worry until there is something to worry about. Right?”

“You mean before you break up with Holly, because you need a valid reason for doing that, right?”

Shit. I was fucking this up.

“No. I was going to break it off with Holly before I saw you at the lake. Just never got the chance.”

“Uh huh,” Sarah muttered. “Just out of curiosity Gunner, when was the last time you were with Holly?”

I gulped.

I did not want to answer that.

No way in hell.

“It doesn’t matter. I’m with you now.”

Sarah looked at me, narrowed her eyes, and stubbornly asked. “When was the last time, Gunner?”

“The night before.”

Sarah smirked, shaking her head. “I should have known. What happened? She told you she wasn’t in the mood, so you went in search of someone who was?”

“No, it wasn’t like that. I didn’t expect to see you in the coffee shop yesterday morning. I thought you were in Europe. Kinda threw me for a loop. When you looked right through me as if I was nothing, it pissed me off. Then you got in that fender bender, and when I held you, it felt right. I didn’t plan on anything, Sarah. Hell, later that day, my brother warned me away from you, reminding me of what your father said. I was mad and went for a ride. I needed to clear my head. When I stopped at the lake, I didn’t expect to see you, let alone naked. Honestly, Sarah. I didn’t plan anything.”

Sarah said nothing as she picked up the test, then opened it and read the instructions. I was finding it hard to read her. I never had that problem before with anyone else. But with Sarah, everything was different. She meant something to me, and I kept saying the wrong things. I was fucking everything up before I could get my foot in the door.

When her brow furrowed, I asked, “What’s wrong?”

“It says I have to wait until six days before my period.”
