“Anything for my big brother.” Ethan rushed to his tow truck.

Just then, the sheriff’s sirens blazed, and a moment later his uncle pulled to a stop behind his car and got out. He strode over to them.

“How are you?” he asked Blair.

“I’m fine.”

“You might be in shock and not realize the extent of your injuries,” Jeff said.

She shot him a look of frustration but said nothing.

“Blair, can you tell me what happened?” his uncle asked.

“It’s all a blur. I was hit on the side. Hard. The next thing I remember, my car was sliding down the hill. I’m sorry that’s all I recall. I wish I’d seen who it was or what car he drove, but I didn’t.”

“We’ll figure it out,” Uncle Adam said.

Jeff placed a hand on his uncle’s arm. “We need to get Blair to the clinic.”

“You go. We’ll take measurements and try to figure out who did this.”

“Thanks.” He turned to Zane. “I’ll follow you to the clinic,” Jeff said.“Then we have to figure out how to keep anything else from happening to Blair,”he telepathed.

“You must have read my thoughts.”Zane turned to Blair. “Let’s get you checked out.”

CHAPTERTEN

Jeff and Zanehad been in the clinic’s waiting room for almost half an hour for Blair to be seen by a doctor about her possible injuries.

Since Blair was understandably anxious, Jeff didn’t want to add to her problems by grilling her about the accident. He waited until he and Zane were alone before discussing the situation.

“On the drive to the clinic, did Blair say anything else about what happened other than she didn’t know who ran her off the road?” Jeff asked.

“All she said she was that she'd been driving rather slowly, minding her own business, when something hit the side of her car. The impact was strong enough for her to lose control and slide sideways down the hill,” Zane said. “She remembered grabbing the steering wheel hard to keep on the road, but the pain in her wrist prevented her from doing so effectively.”

“She must have been scared out of her wits.” Jeff twisted in his seat and faced his friend. “Here’s what I’ve been mulling over in my head. If the break-in hadn’t happened at Woodland Estates, I’d say that the driver was trying to pass, got too close, and ended up hitting her,” Jeff speculated. “That, or the person was likely texting and not paying attention.”

“That’s a reasonable assumption.”

“If that were the case, why not stop?” Jeff asked though he could guess a few reasons.

“The person was probably scared when he saw Blair’s car go off the road. Sad to say, too many people would rather run away than face the consequences. That would be especially true if the person had been drinking,” Zane said.

Jeff’s mind raced. “True, but could this accident be more than a random event? Could it be connected to the theft? I know it’s a reach, but the car accident could have been an attempt to get her out of the way altogether.” Jeff’s gut churned at that thought.

As his concern for her increased, Jeff couldn’t ignore the fact that his feelings for Blair had grown beyond anything he'd ever experienced. Too bad she seemed drawn to Zane and not him.

“That’s a stretch, but it is possible. Why would someone want to harm Blair though? To the outside world, she’s merely a real estate agent.”

Jeff leaned closer, not wanting the three other people in the waiting room to hear their conversation. “You told me about John Gaines showing up at the model home unexpectedly. He could still be upset that Blair didn’t jump at the chance to go back to work for him.”

“I’ll grant you the guy was an ass, but if he really wanted her to come back to work for him, running her off the road wouldn’t help. Blair could have been killed.”

Jeff stabbed a hand through his hair. “This is a nightmare. Blair is acting as if everything is okay, but she has to be scared to death it could happen again.”

Zane leaned forward. “I’ve known you my whole life, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen you so upset over a woman.”

Jeff wasn’t positive if what he was feeling was the draw of a mate or not, but it sure felt like it. As much as he wanted to deny it was happening, if it turned out Blair and he were meant to be together, he needed to prepare Zane for the possibility.“That’s because I think she might be my mate.”
