“Come on, we’re in the VIP section. We have all the drinks money can buy.You should know that.”
“It’s been a while. It must have slipped my mind, sorry.”In all honesty it had.I’d easily forgotten about my life prior to this last year, especially with being away at school before that.So many life altering events have happened that I left this part of me behind.
When we get to the table, I’m surprised to see so many familiar faces, and some new ones.
“Let me introduce you to my boyfriend.Harrison, sweetie, this is my dearest friend, Lacey.”Veronica is absolutely smitten with this man.
“It’s nice to meet you.”
His hand reaches out in formal greeting, and I take it in return. When our eyes meet, there’s a sense of familiarity about him.His hand holds mine a fraction longer than I’m comfortable with, then he lets go.
“Likewise, Lacey.”Is it just me or is the way he said my name on the verge of creepy.I internally shake my thoughts and focus on the rest of the group as they welcome me back.
“I can’t believe you went through such an ordeal last year.I mean, to be associated with The Mafia,” Kayleigh whispers, “must have been terrifying.”
I see the gossip train hasn’t slowed down at all.
“They aren’t The Mafia, they’re businessmen who happen to be very powerful and influential?”This earns me a side eye from every person within hearing proximity.
“Yeah, right.Of course, they are.How else are they able to slide under the radar while the cops take all the credit.”
The hairs on the back of my neck stand with Harrison’s admission.
“I mean, so I’ve heard.”He laughs as if it’s a big joke and the other men join in.I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t like Harrison. There’s something off about him, but I don’t know what it is.
“Lacey, where have you been hiding these days? You haven’t replaced us, have you?”Diane pouts.
“Sorry, D.Nothing exciting has been happening in my world lately.”I look past her and see Harrison’s eyes pop with evil mischief. It’s a look I have grown to understand, which means no good will come of it.If only I could remember where I’ve seen him before.
“Aw, you poor thing. You should have stayed with us instead of going off to Cali. You always knew how to have a good time.”
I can’t get over how I used to put up with all their fake bimbo personalities before.
Was I just like them?
Oh my god, I was.
I fake a wave and let the comment slide.“Speaking of good times, I want to dance.Does anyone else want to dance?”The group cheers in agreement, well the ladies do.Holding up shots each we all say the chant that has been our ritual for as long as I can remember.
“To cock and balls.”
Cheers surround us as we finish our liquid courage then make our way to the dance floor. We start as a group until one by one the single gals break off to dry hump, or in Kayleigh’s case, get finger fucked on the dance floor.
I think Diane feels sorry for me because she tells her boyfriend to go get some more drinks while she stays here to dance with me.
“You’re still the most beautiful of the group, you know. Please don’t tell V I said that.”She hiccup-giggles into her hand.“I’ve missed you, Lacey. It hasn’t been nearly as exciting without you around. Please come back to us.”
I almost feel guilty for losing contact when I moved away then became friends with Ava, but now that I’m here with them again, it’s kind of fun.I’ve missed this side of me.The carefree, unapologetically fun me.
“I just might, D.”I smile my first genuine smile in weeks.I’m pretty sure the shots have taken over my body, but I feel pretty good.Relaxed even.
We dance, laugh and drink the night away until we can’t any longer.
I sat down a while ago and took my heels off, which may have been a grave mistake. It gave me time to open my eyes to my surroundings. Most of the group have boyfriends now and they genuinely look happy together.
Suddenly, I feel the urge to get out of here.I need fresh air.I put my shoes back on, then stand from my seat and take three of the shots from the table in front of me, downing them consecutively.
Tequila and… “Water?Who the fuck ordered shots of water?”I look around the area and all eyes are on me.Rather, all the female mouths have dropped to the floor, and all of the men are taking a protective stance in front of their women while all eyes starebeyondme.
